“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”   ~Proverbs 11:1

I’m an intelligent adult, perfectly capable of making my own decisions. Why should I share my secrets with others and ask for their input? You will discover the answer is 100% Biblical!

“He is on the path of life who heeds instruction, but he who forsakes reproof goes astray.”   ~Proverbs 10:17

Nothing in this world is harder to do or causes more stress than making huge decisions all your own. If you think you're so smart that you don’t need any advice, think again. Some of the greatest catastrophes in life can be avoided by seeking a second, third or even fourth opinion.

Don’t just seek any counsel, seek out wise, godly counsel! And I’m not talking about a phycologist, medium or life coach . . . I’m talking about someone that God can use to give you His advice rather than just worldly precepts. Pray! Pray for wisdom from God. Don’t just take advice from anyone, but rather pray for God to lead you to His choice for counsel.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you”   ~James 1:5

“The godly offer good counsel; they teach right from wrong. They have made God’s law their own, so they will never slip from his path.“   ~Psalm 37:30-31 NLT

So why, exactly, is this multitude of counselors so valuable?

“Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established.”   ~Proverbs 15:22

The biblical principle of seeking advice from a multitude of godly advisors, instead of relying solely on our own skewed thoughts, is a promised source of wisdom. By seeking godly counsel we are far less inclined to be led astray and deceived.

If we forego seeking out good, godly advice, we are then at the mercy of the foolish. The Bible gives many examples of people who listened to the wrong type of counsel with disastrous results. A multitude of counselors won’t help if those who counsel you do not walk with God. No-one needs the counsel of fools. If you’re going to get advice, get good advice!

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise.”   ~Proverbs 12:15

Slow and steady wins the race…

We must take our time when trying to reach life decisions. Again this is sound, Biblical advice. Have you ever heard the saying, haste makes waste? Well, this is a much-needed warning when it comes to rushing into making life altering choices.

“Also it is not good for a person to be without knowledge, and he who makes haste with his feet errs.”   ~Proverbs 19:2

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.”   ~Proverbs 21:5

Before making any big decisions ask yourself this one question, is what I’m wanting to do something that would glorify God and make Him proud? Always remember that God’s way is the best way. If what you're proposing goes against Biblical principles in any way, ditch the plan. We must weigh all of our choices against the perfect, infallible word of God or we will be deceived and led astray by Satan. Let the word of God be your best counsel.

“Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.”   ~Psalm 119:24

“There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”   ~Proverbs 16:25

Don’t think you’re the exception to the rule when it comes to statistics. If something is risky, reconsider. If what you’re doing isn’t working, change your direction and adjust your course. If it’s failed for you before, stop making the same mistake! Don’t be so stubborn that you bring harm to yourself out of sheer obstinance by trying to repeatedly force things.

“Like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.”   ~Proverbs 26:11

“A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own mind.”   ~Proverbs 18:2

If what you’re considering is uncertain, and most people seem to fail at it, you must recalculate the risk factors before just blindly jumping. Assess the potential risks and make a prudent, well thought out decision. Prudent simply means, careful, thoughtful, and well advised. Yep, there’s that advise/counsel thing again!

“The naïve believes everything, but the prudent man considers his steps.”   ~Proverbs 14:15

It’s essential that we surround ourselves with trusted advisors—a multitude of counselors—realizing that even the wisest of people see things differently. Haviing a multitude of counsel is valuable because hearing varied viewpoints gives us a helthier foundation upon which to form opinions.

The only way to make really good decisions is to fully investigate an issue from many angles, seek the Lord’s wisdom, and wait on God's lead before you move forward. The key to making wise decisions is basing all of your decisions on the principles of the Bible, for the word of God never fails.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”   ~Proverbs 3:5-6
