empowered by god

How do I get God’s power?

“And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’  Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”   ~2 Corinthians 12:9-10

In a word . . . surrender. Surrendering to God is how we become empowered. Once we lay down our futile efforts and allow the Spirit of Christ to take charge, we can then do anything!

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”   ~Philippians 4:13

If we can just learn how to get out of God’s way and stop trying to be in control of everything, we might see great things begin to happen in our lives. If we would focus more on doing God's work, doing the things that the Bible tells us to do, and not doing what He tells us not to do, we might begin to see the power of Almighty God taking over.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”   ~John 14:12-14

God openly tells us that He is giving us His power. Without a shadow of a doubt, we can become empowered by God if we do His will rather than our own, and then simply believe!

“That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy.”   ~Colossians 1:10-11

That verse clearly tells us to be fruitful in every good work as well as increasing in the knowledge of God, i/e learning His ways by reading His word.

Time to learn how to fly!

Surrender is most definitely the key to this. Allowing God to be the leader in all that we do. Becoming willing to go when He says go, and do what He tells us to do is the really only part we play in this trade-off. We surrender the delusion that we are in control of our lives and stop trying to force our plans, and then He empowers us to do His will.

Surrendering to God isn’t just a once in a while affair when you need some assistance. You can't only add Jesus to your life when you need Him. We can’t just call Him now and then; we must surrender our lives over to Him, 24/7!

The Bible repeatedly tells us we can have God’s power:

  • May you be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy.   ~Ephesians 6:10
  • Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.     ~Isaiah 40:29  zz
  • He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He increases strength …   ~Ephesians 3:16
  • And we have such trust through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.    ~2 Corinthians 3:4-5
  • If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.   ~John 15:4-5

If we surrender our lives over to God, the same God that spoke the Universe into existence will live in us. The same Power that rose Jesus from the grave, the same Power that will command the dead to wake, lives in us!  Think about that!

We must ask Him to reside in us. We must become willing to surrender our will for His will in order to get His power.  Totally surrendering to God is how we get His power. When we accept the reality that we are no match for the devil and get out of God’s way, we can then become empowered because Jesus will then fight our battles for us.

Yes, God will empower us with the ability to do His will if we but surrender! Not only will we have God’s protection, and His guidance, but He will also give us the divine power we need to do His will!

“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”   ~Revelation 3:5 KJV

Overcomith what? Sin, that’s what! Once we surrender to God throught the promptings of the Holy Spirit, surrender our evil urges and weak willpower up for His Almighty power and perfect will—then and only then will we become empowered with God’s power—and only then will we be able to refuse to give in to our mortal urges.

We can only overcome sin through faith in what Jesus did on the cross—faith in the totality of God’s forgiveness through this inconceivable act of redemptive love, along with the one and only thing we bring into this whole equation—surrender.

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”   ~Isaiah 41:10

You might say that I was a rather late spiritual bloomer, tripping my way into the Lord's arms not all that long ago. Nevertheless, I've been on the fast track ever since through a decade of Bible study courses and daily devotion. Changing careers a few years back and becoming a published author of Christian motivational books, leading to spiritual children's books and now this blog.
