“So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” ~Hebrews 9:28
Jesus is making us a once in a lifetime offer to live with Him forever! But maybe you feel like I felt. . . I wanted to accept His offer but didn't know how, didn’t even have a clue where to start.
You might also be wondering what exactly do I have to do to be worthy of this offer? I sure did…and I surely didn't feel worthy of this kind of love, that God should die on a cross for me so I could live with Him forever?
The plain and simple truth is we aren't worthy, not a one of us, and we will never be worthy no matter how hard we try. Fortunately, our worthiness has nothing to do with His offer. Bottom line, we can do nothing…nothing but open our mouth and accept. That’s it!
“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” ~ Romans 10:9
We can simply open our mouth and say…
Jesus, I accept your offer to me. I believe that you died in my place so that I could live with you forever. I also believe that you rose from the dead and went to heaven and will come again to raise me up and take me to heaven with you. I accept your free offer of forgiveness for all of my sins, and thank you for what you did for me.
That’s it. That’s all there is to it. . . accept His offer and then lean on Him with all your might.
You see, it’s only through faith that we can acquire this eternal life — faith in what He did—and not by anything we do or don’t do. It is only thought His magnificent plan of redemption that we have been bought back from Satan and eternal death. All we need to acquire this redemption is faith.
“And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life” ~1 John - 5:11-12
Pretty simply, huh? However, also accepting His resurrection is paramount in understanding this gift of salvation. Jesus died a painful death on a cross for our sins, literally taking our death penalty. He died and was buried in a tomb. However, He didn’t stay dead, He was resurrected and rose from the grave.
Yes…He is alive! He is very much alive and we know this because the Bible tells us that He walked the earth and was seen by hundreds of witnesses. He then accented into heaven, just as we will do upon His second coming.
“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the first fruits, afterward those who are Christ at His coming.” ~1 Corinthians 15:22-23
God will undo our sins, He will also undo our death as well. He will make the dead alive just as He did for Jesus (the first of the resurrected). His power is beyond our ability to comprehend, but it’s real nevertheless. He will return, He will awaken us from the grave, and He will take us home.
“But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” ~1 Corinthians 15:20
Once again, I repeat…God can not lie! If He said it, He will do it. Our only job is to believe it. Faith is the only thing we bring to this entire equation. All we have to do is hear and then believe!
This is why the gospel of Jesus Christ is called the good news, and why God wants us to share this incredibly good news with everyone.
God gives us this invitation in Isaiah — an invitation to hear Him. All we have to do is want to listen and He will do the rest.
“Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you…” ~Isaiah 55:3
The sea of sin…
Think of it this way, if you were drowning (and we are, in a sea of sin) and someone came along in a boat and said, “I’m gonna throw you a rope, all you gotta do is grab hold of it and I’ll pull you to safety!” Would you refuse? Would you say, “No thanks, I don't need any help, I can save myself.” Of course not, that would be ridiculous. Well, that’s exactly what we are saying when we say no-thanks to Jesus.
God has covered our sins. Even though we are born into corrupted flesh we will be sinless upon our resurrection. God’s got this, He’s got it handled. All we have to do is stay connected to Him, trust Him and never leg go of His hand. He will rescue us if we just accept His offer.
“So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption and it is raised in incorruption.” ~1 Corinthians 15:42
Now that we understand how to be assured that we will go to heaven…how can we learn to allow God to lead us through this life?
