“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make a way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” ~1 Corinthians 10:13
How can we ever stop sinning if we continue to give in to temptation? This is a question everyone asks at some point in their life. The answer is quite simple, we can’t, but . . . God can! He will empower us to resist, all we need to do is ask and believe.
In order to truly accept this Biblical truth, we must first fully understand the problem. The devil is clever, so clever that we usually don't even realize that we're being tricked until it's too late. There always seems to be some sort of tempting thought knocking at the door of our hearts.
Satan knows our weaknesses because he studies us. He’s been observing us since the day we were born and is constantly knocking at our hearts, peddling exactly what he knows we like. He knows precisely where the kinks are in our psyche, what the weakest areas of our minds are, and that’s exactly what he tempts us with.
He baits us in a multitude of ways. He tricks and deceives, tempts, and distracts us in any way he can. He will do everything in his power to get us to give in to temptation and submit to him. He knows he can’t overpower the Spirit of God within us, so he gets us to choose to turn to him and give in to his temptation. He knows he can then pull us away from Jesus and have his way with us, and in so doing he can achieve his ultimate goal—to hurt Jesus! Because when we’re hurting, God’s also hurting.
How can we ever resist . . .
How can we stop ourselves from falling for the devil’s tricks? On our own, we are no match for the devil. He is an extremely powerful, supernatural being, but God is a gazillion times more powerful!
The solution to every problem in this life is to take it to God. First, you must admit you have a sin problem, then all you have to do is want to stop doing whatever it is that you're doing, and just ask God to remove the desire from you. That's all there is to it.
God knows what temptations Satan is going to tempt us with before we know. He’s already made a way out for us so that we won’t have to give in and sin. Jesus has already overcome sin, He died for our sins, all of them. Now, all we need to do is believe and receive.
“Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” ~1 John 5:5
The Bible is very clear that we can overcome sin! However, the victory isn’t by our efforts alone, we can only succeed through the empowerment of God. We will get the victory . . . for God always leads us in triumph!
We must be proactive though, we do play a very big part in this process. We must do everything in our power to set ourselves up for success, and that includes removing whatever or whoever causes us to sin. That’s what these verses in Matthew 5:29 & 30 are saying, if something or someone is causing us to sin we need to pluck it out and cut ourselves off from it.
We need to want to stop sinning so much so that we become willing to remove ourselves from every situation that might entice us. As the good book repeats; repent, repent, repent! The word repent simply means . . . turn away from sin and stop doing it!
“We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.” ~1 John 5:18-19
If you do everything in your power to run to Jesus, and you still backslide and succumb to the same temptation, repeat the process. As long as you continue to take it all to the Lord, you will eventually have the victory, guaranteed! God won't give up on you, just don't give up on Him.
Jesus has already overpowered Satan on your behalf, all you have to do is obey and believe! Our faith in His power is how we overcome, surrender it all to the Lord, and then re-surrender again.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” ~Ephesians 6:12
This is what's known as spiritual warfare. We are no match for spiritual beings, that's why God tells us that it's not our battle, but His.
“Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” ~1 Samuel 17:47
Jesus is the only match for Satan and his demons. On our own we don't stand a chance, we’ll lose every time. But Jesus has already overcome evil, on the cross, and in doing so He has empowered us.
Jesus spoke the following words of empowerment:
“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy….” ~Luke 10:19
Q: Are you ready to accept that you've been empowered?
