God. Father, Son, Spirit

How can we understand the Holy Spirit? – Part 1

Once again, as is the premise of this blog, we will go to the Holy Bible, our only source of truth, for the answer to this question. Let’s start this quest by looking at all three parts of the Godhead—better known as the trinity—God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit of God.

God is all three in one.

God is the coalescence of and was manifested in all three entities. While God is one being, He exists eternally as three coequal forms. They are all fully God, were not created, have existed forever, and are all eternal. God expressed His multiplicity right from the beginning of creation, referring to Himself in a plural tense when He said, let Us make man in Our image.

”Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…”   ~Genesis 1:26

And again, this plurality is mentioned in the middle of the Bible when God is speaking to Isaiah in a vision. This verse is interesting and very telling because God is referring to Himself in both singular and plural tenses.

“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us.”   ~Isaiah 6:8

Now let’s really take a look at these three parts of God more closely. God the Father is the deity, Jesus the Son reveals the deity, and the Holy Spirit carries out the work of the deity, but they are nevertheless all parts of the same God.

We pray to the Father (Almighty God), in the name of the Son (Jesus Christ, God in the fleshour redeemer and mediator), through the power of the Spirit (God’s power in action, His active force). Here in this next verse, a few of the many names of God are revealed as Isaiah prophecies about the birth of the Messiah.

“For unto us a Child is born. Unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”   ~Isaiah 9:6

Now, we’ll look more closely at the Holy Spirit. In the following verse, we see that an angel told Mary that the Holy Spirit was going to come to her and the power of God the Father would touch her through the His Holy Spirit to impregnate her, and that was why the baby she would have would be called the Son of God. Clearly, we see the Holy Spirit as the active force of God here.

“And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”   ~Luke 1:35

The Holy Spirit is also how God communicates with us. He sends His Spirit to us, to live in us and guide us into all truth. His word (the entire Bible) is truth.

“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My Statutes and you will keep My judgments and do them.”   ~Ezekiel 36:27

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”   ~John 4:24

God clearly revealed the presence of His Holy Spirit right from the beginning of creation. The Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters —the Holy Spirit was most definitely there at creation!

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth . . . and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”   ~Genesis 1:1-2

And here again, in this next verse . . .

“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him…”   ~Isaiah 42:1

God is making reference to all three when He says, (My Servant, My Elect One), He is referring to the Son/Jesus, and (My soul) speaking of Himself/the Father, and (My Spirit), the one and only Holy Spirit! Again, all three mentioned in the same verse.

Jesus is God! Yes, Jesus is both fully God and fully man. Jesus is eternal, He has always been. Jesus and God existed together before Jesus came to earth. Jesus is referred to as the Word of God because He is the one who spoke God’s word into existence.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.“   ~John 1:1

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”   ~John 1:14

Jesus prayed to the Father, was in constant communication with the Father, and even said He was going to His Father when He promised to send a Helper, the Holy Spirit.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.”   ~John 14:16

God sent His Son to earth in human form—Jesus— to reconcile all humanity and to reveal the essence of God to the whole world.

“I and My Father are one.”   ~John 10:30

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God is with us.”   ~Matthew 1:23

“…God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself…”   ~2 Corinth 5:19

The apostle, Paul, clearly revealed all three parts of the Godhead when he spoke of Jesus in the following verse. I think this verse perfectly expresses the three identities of God.

“For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.” ~Ephesians 2:18

You might say that I was a rather late spiritual bloomer, tripping my way into the Lord's arms not all that long ago. Nevertheless, I've been on the fast track ever since through a decade of Bible study courses and daily devotion. Changing careers a few years back and becoming a published author of Christian motivational books, leading to spiritual children's books and now this blog.
