“And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” ~1 Kings 19:12
That still small voice comes to us in our quiet moments—this gentle little voice is the Holy Spirit. God sends His benevolent Spirit to comfort and guide all of us, to prompt and convict, to encourage and inspire.
We must learn to be still and calm, God’s Spirit will not be heard if we are in a state of anger, anxiety or chaos. He is a gentle Spirit of peace and love.
“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace…” ~1 Corinthians 14:33
I love the way Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit when His disciples were completely devastated at the onset of His crucifixion. He explained that He wouldn’t leave them all alone, but that He would send a Helper (advocate, counselor, comforter) to help them.
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” ~John 16:7
Jesus acknowledged the three separate parts of the Godhead when He told His disciples to go and baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” ~Matthew 28:19
The Bible clearly shows us a wonderful example of the division of the trinity at the Baptism of Jesus. All three were there at the Jordon but separated. John heard the voice of the Father from heaven, saw the Holy Spirit appearing as that of a dove, and the Son, the physical Jesus, was standing right there in the middle of the river with him!
God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are all parts of the same, One and only, Almighty God! Unquestionably, this is by far the most difficult thing to understand about God. It’s nearly impossible for me to get my brain wrapped around the concept of three entities of the same God, but my inability to comprehend this fact doesn't make it any less true. If God, through the inspiration of His Holy Spirit, inspired these truths to be put into His Holy Scripture, it is true, and that’s good enough for me.
I learned a long time ago, we can not pick and choose what we want to believe from His word. That’s one of the devil’s favorite tricks to get us to deviate from the Bible. Satan tells us that some of it is true and some isn’t. It’s this kind of deluded thinking that allows us to be okay with sinning just a little— believing it’s okay because we really don’t accept the whole package as fact. He’s so sneaky, this was exactly how he got Adam and Eve to disobey God, by convincing them that what God had told them wasn’t completely true. And this, my friends, is where we leave the safety of the infallible word of God, and enter onto the slippery slope of the devil’s deception.
On our own, we will naturally fall for Satan’s lies. If we deviate at all regarding the word of God, even a little bit, Satan will be able to lead us down the garden path just like he did in Eden. But, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can see through these falsehoods and deceptions. By studying the Bible and having total faith in the infallible Holy Word of God as truth, we will be able to stand strong against the deceptions of the enemy. This is why it’s imperative to trust the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth and stand firm of every word!
We all wander away from God from time to time, just like Adam and Eve did, and this saddens Him, but God sends His gentle Spirit to call to us and urge us to return. Return to me is one of the most repeated terms in the Old Testament. God pleads with all of us, through His gentle Spirit of love, to turn from our rebellion.
We are all stubborn, stiff-necked people. We all rebel, but He never gives up on us. The Lord continually beckons us back through the promptings of His loving Spirit. When we ignore the Holy Spirit we are ignoring God!
If you believe in God, you do believe in the Holy Spirit. God is the Holy Spirit. Remember at the very beginning of the Bible God made reference to more than one being present at the time of creation, using the plural terms Us and Our. This clearly reveals that God is the coalescence of all three, and here again in the New Testament, the plurality of God is once again validated.
“For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one.” ~1 John 5:7
Just because we can’t understand that God is a multiplicity of three entities doesn't mean it isn’t true. Nor does our inability to comprehend the invisible Holy Spirit make Him any less real.
I don’t understand electricity either, but it’s real nevertheless. I can turn on a lamp and see the results of it even tho I don’t understand how it works. The same thing goes for this invisible Spirit of God, I may not see Him, but I certainly do see the results of Him every single time I pray. This is where faith comes in. Our faith is how we accept the things we can’t see with our eyes or understand with our minds.
“Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” ~John 20:29
The most important thing in everything we think, feel, say, and do in this life, is that the Spirit of God is in us to guide us. We must embrace Him and allow Him to lead us into the truth, that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that He, Jesus, is our only way back to the Father. He is our all!
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.” ~2 Corinthians 13:14
