“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.” ~Psalm 34:13
It’s not a lie until you get caught…so they say, right? Well, the simple fact of the matter is that any lie is wrong; whether or not we ever get caught is really not the issue here. The fact that we are opting to speak untrue words is really the bigger issue.
Sometimes we tell tales to embellish our story and make ourselves look far greater than we really are—other times we blatantly lie to prevent consequences—and sometimes we lie because we know what we are doing is flat-out wrong!
“For he who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.” ~1 Peter 3:10
“The truthful lip shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but counselors of peace have joy.” ~Proverbs 12:19-20
Deception is literally what caused the fall of man. The very first sin was caused by Satan deceiving or lying to Eve! If we exhibit deceit, in any form, we are no better than Satan himself! Satan has tried to lie and deceive us since the fall and continues to do so. He wants to get as many as possible to believe his lies and follow him into eternal destruction.
”For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” ~Matthew 24:24
All deception is a form of lying. This verse emphasizes the fact that deception is alive and kicking—that Satan is on his final lap to deceive as many as possible, even true godly believers if he can. What does this really mean? Simply put, it means that no one is immune to the devil’s sophisticated and elaborate brand of deception. Satan has had thousands upon thousands of years to refine his technique, so, you better believe he’s as slick as it gets. He leads us to think lying is nothing more than a simple misdemeanor—nothing but a little side stepping from the truth —no big deal!
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” ~1 Peter 5:8
Why is this so important for us to understand the relevance regarding Satan’s deceptions? Because if we don’t stay vigilant to the word of God we can and will fall prey to the devil’s tricks.
A little lie is like a little poison in the soup. Does it matter, will it lead to our demise? Yes, it will. If we become complacent regarding right and wrong we are approaching a very slippery slope. If we can find a way to condone any deliberate wrong-doing we will surely be heading down the wrong path. Lying, no matter how small and insignificant, is a step in the wrong direction.
If you have to stop and ask yourself if what you’re about to say or do is wrong, chances are it is. If you need to use a term like “under the table” or “behind closed doors” you might want to reconsider your actions.
Can God Lie . . .?
The answer to this question is unequivocally NO! God can not lie! His holiness makes it impossible for Him to lie. It’s not that He chooses not to lie or would prefer not to, He simply can’t. It’s not in His character to do any wrong, He can not sin, and lying is clearly a sin. Here are just a few verses that establish this fact.
“That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.” ~Hebrews 6:18
“in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.” ~Titus 1:2
“And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor relent. For He is not a man, that He should relent.” ~1 Samuel 15:29
God is so very black and white when it comes to sin. And I, for one, am so grateful of that—it makes it all crystal clear. We get to choose, by way of our freewill, which path we will follow. There is no middle ground regarding the matter of sin. There is right and there is wrong, period!
Lies seem so insignificant. There’s even playful terms, like “white lies” that imply that it’s alright, it’s just a little lie with good intentions, and besides, everyone lies, right? Well, lying is the one step that Satan wants us to take leading to the ultimate path of destruction. If He can get us to take just one little step in the wrong direction, he will then try to lead us totally away from God, and that is his ultimate plan.
Lying is no different than any other habitual wrongdoing. We can try to justify it in a hundred different ways, nevertheless, it is still wrong! It’s wrong because it’s what I call a gateway sin, in that it will lead to more and more wrong doings. It’s wrong because God said so. If God says don’t do something, that is an all inclusive command. There’s absolutely no wiggle room when it comes to the word of God.
“Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds.” ~Colossians 3:9
Why do we lie? We lie because we know what we’re doing is wrong, that’s why! Here’s a very simple concept to keep you from having to lie, just don’t do anything that you would have to lie about! It’s a great way to keep yourself safe, free from the temptation to ever tell another lie.
“Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.” ~Ephesians 4:25
