“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…”   ~Luke 4:18

The Holy Spirit is mentioned by a variety of titles, the Holy Ghost, because he is invisible, the Spirit of God and the Spirit of the Lord, because He is God—the Spirit of Truth because He is both the essence of all truth as well as the One who guides us into all truth.

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine, and declare it you.”   ~John 16:13-14

He is also referred to as the Spirit of … Holiness, Life, Glory, Wisdom, Grace, Understanding and Judgement. We need to accept that the Holy Spirit is everywhere all at the same time, as difficult as that is to understand. He is God, and God is everywhere, therefore The Spirit of the Lord is everywhere and there is nowhere that He doesn't exist.

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?”   ~Psalm 139:7

God will never leave His children, that’s a promise throughout the Bible. He never gives up on us, even when we turn from Him He continues to call to us through His Holy Spirit. When we listen to Him we allow Him to dwell or reside in us, but when we reject Him we are choosing to go it alone.

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”   ~Romans 8:11

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God . . . ”   ~1 Corinthians 6:19

God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit are three parts of the same God. Jesus said, “You believe in God believe also in Me” and “I am sending the Holy Spirit to you as a Helper and Comforter.”

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”   ~John 14:26 KJV

The Holy Spirit is the part of God that comforts and communicates with us. We don’t physically see God when He comes to us to comfort us, do we? No. The Spirit of God is not physically visible, but we still, nevertheless know when He is prompting us.

The Holy Spirit reveals the things of God to us. Spiritual things must be discerned spiritually. On our own, we are unable to understand the spiritual things of the Bible, but through the Holy Spirit, we can comprehend that which would otherwise be impossible.

“But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all thing, yes, the deep things of God.”   ~1 Corinthians 2:10

God sends His loving Spirit to work in us and through us if we allow Him, but we can choose to reject Him as well. The Bible says that when we reject God we do so by grieving the Holy Spirit, which means rejecting Him.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by who you were sealed for the day of redemption.”   ~Ephesians 4:30

If we continually ignore the subtle little promptings that God uses to touch our heart through the power of His Holy Spirit, we grieve Him (cause Him sadness, and distress). When we shut Him out by blocking these promptings, we eventually severe the communication cord with God’s Holy Spirit and in so doing we eventually cut ourselves off from God!

That is why this is known as the only unpardonable sin—when we choose to not hear Him we grow spiritually deaf. . . and that is when we become permanently lost. He never stops calling—we stop listening.

“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven men.” ~Matthew 12:31

The non-believers of this world do not acknowledge the Holy Spirit or His workings. Jesus told us it would be this way.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”   ~John 14:16-17

If the non-believers of this world didn’t accept Jesus, whom they could see, they certainly won’t accept the Spirit who is invisible.

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”  ~1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV

Now that we’re beginning to understand the comforting love and gentle convicting power of God’s Holy Spirit…
