Why did God use these imperfect people?

Why do Bible Heroes fall short?

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"   ~Romans 3:23-24

As that verse clearly states, we all fall short, every single one of us, even the Bible heroes. Even though we fall, God still saves! That is . . . if we choose Him.

Just about every hero in the Bible seems to fall way short when it comes to righteousness. Moses killed an Egyptian, David committed adultery and then murder, Noah got drunk,  Jacob wrestled with God, Job argued with God, Abraham had an affair, Paul was a Christian killer, and even Jesus’ disciples fell short, denying Him at His crucifixion.

So why would God use these people for His mighty purposes and as Biblical examples of Godly men? For two very distinct reasons. To show us that no-one is without sin—everyone needs an all-forgiving Savior, and to let us see that He can, and will, use anyone—even you and me. Honestly, if He can use a screw-up like me, He can use absolutely anyone!

If we dig a little deeper into each of these stories we will discover that these so-called heroes were just like you and me. They all tried to do their best, they all wanted to please God, but sometimes their humanity took over. Sometimes they wanted what they wanted and just couldn’t wait out God’s timing! Sometimes they fell away from God’s will because they were weak and gave into temptation. Sometimes they gave in to frustration and anxiety by listening to the tempter. They were all human, they were all living in a fallen world and they all fell.

All of these true biblical accountings help us to see that we are all in the same sin mess and we all need the salvation that only Jesus offers. I know that every time I read about these heroes messing up, it gives me hope. I just figure if they can make these huge mistakes, commit these ginormous sins and still be in God’s grace, there’s still hope for the rest of us.

When God revealed Himself to me and convicted me with His Holy Spirit, my life began to change. It was an inch by inch walk with Jesus from then until now. He put a deep desire in me, and it took a lot of correction and patience on His part, that’s for sure. He led me from a sin-filled life to a life of service to Him. I gave my life to Jesus over a decade ago and decided to follow Him. I left my old life behind and jumped into biweekly Bible studies for many years to follow.

I then started authoring Christian books, writing this weekly Christian Blog and now even moving to another state to be a part of a Christian organization that feeds the homeless. I volunteer to cook and go out on the street to feed hundreds of homeless families every other weekend. Don’t anyone ever try to tell me that God can’t change people and use them for His purpose? I am living proof of what He’s capable of!

“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, be holy, for I am holy.”   ~1 Peter 1:12-16

Now, let’s take a closer look into some of these Bible accounts and we will truly begin to see ourselves in these stories. Let’s start with Adam and Eve. Adam chose to listen to his wife rather than obeying God. Do we ever listen to others? Then there was Abraham, again listening to his wife rather than trusting God’s timing because it was taking so long. He was willing to commit a sin with another woman to try to solve his procreation problem. Do we ever try to jump ahead of God with our own solutions to speed things up, even to the extent of sinning to get what we want? I know I sure have. Have you ever argued or wrestled with God’s word, trying to rationalize your disobedience?

Why did God use these imperfect people?

If we’re honest, we are all guilty—yep, we are all in the same exact sin condition. Every single one of us has failed God and fallen short. And truly, if not for the grace of God and His plan of redemption we’d all be lost forever. If not for the fact the God loves us so much that even before He created the earth, He conceived a plan so we could all live with Him forever. He knew we would all sin. He knew none of us would ever make it to heaven, but He wanted us with Him so much so that He brought heaven down to earth when He became a man, the God-man, Jesus, to pay the price for our sins.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”   ~Romans 6:23

All of these fallen heroes help us to see that we all fall from time to time, that we all fall short and we all need a Savior. I don’t know about you but I have fallen so short, so often, that I need to read all the time about all these others, all far better than me and yet they all still fell into sin.

God’s arm of forgiveness is far-reaching. It is for all mankind, for all sin. These fallen heroes help me to understand that God truly wants to use every single person for His glory and that He wants to have all of us with Him forever.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”   ~2 Peter 3:9

You might say that I was a rather late spiritual bloomer, tripping my way into the Lord's arms not all that long ago. Nevertheless, I've been on the fast track ever since through a decade of Bible study courses and daily devotion. Changing careers a few years back and becoming a published author of Christian motivational books, leading to spiritual children's books and now this blog.
