“The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.” ~Luke 11:34
What does the Bible say about horror movies? Well, since there were no movies back when the Bible was inspired it doesn’t refer to movies, per se, but God is very clear about what we use to feed our minds, specifically what we allow our eyes to take in. If our eyes are the lamp of our whole body, then what we choose to watch with our eyes is our responsibility. What we put into our subconscious through what we allow ourselves to see will ultimately be the source of our subconscious thoughts. If we put in horrible things, Satan can use these things to corrupt our thoughts, dreams and feelings. However, if we feed our minds the food of the word of God, God can use these subconscious thoughts to bring them to mind whenever He needs to.
When we watch horror movies or any excessive violence, these images and thoughts are deposited into our subconscious banks. Even reading books about violence or horrible things can have the same harmful effect.

Becoming aware of this fact is vital to learning how to get in line with God. Learning to fill our minds with the things of God is the key to not only understanding and wisdom, but to peace as well. How can we expect to have sweet dreams if we fill our minds with horror?
Satan is very clever. He’s been observing us for thousands of years and knows exactly how to get under our skin without us even knowing. He knows how to infiltrate the portals of our minds with his trash. He uses our desire to have the freedom to choose what we read and watch to trick us into mentally eating trash. Our free will is our biggest nemesis! God allows us the freedom to choose; good or bad, right or wrong, and even, peace or horror. Choose wisely—choose peace!
“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” ~1 Timothy 4:12-16
What are we filling ourselves with? God says to meditate and focus our minds on the things of God, but that’s not what Satan says. He tells us that’s no fun, go watch a horror flick and get your mind off your problems!
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” ~Philippines 4:8
God tells us to fill our minds with the things that are pure and truly praiseworthy! We are to meditate or “think on” (King James Version) these things for a very good purpose because our thoughts will ultimately guide our actions!
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” ~Romans 12:2
When we are conforming to this world, we’re believing it’s okay to watch and read about these horrible things. Every time we take a step in the wrong direction we move farther away from God. This is how Satan gets us. This is how he eventually gets us so absorbed in worldly things that we don’t even realize that God is no longer in any of our thoughts!
“The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.” ~Psalm 10:4
The only way we can keep from being absorbed into this sin-filled society is to keep our thoughts on the Lord, and the only way to do that is to stay in contact with Him through prayer and His word. Only then will He be able to guide our steps and keep us from evil.
“Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve me from violent men, Who have purposed to make my steps stumble. Keep me from the snares they have laid for me, And from the traps of the workers of iniquity.” ~Psalm 140:4 & 141:9
We must keep our focus on the things of God. So . . . what exactly are the things of God? The following is from the Message Bible and it pretty much sums it up.
“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.” ~Philippines 4:8-9 MSG
