“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” ~Ephesians 5:11 ESV
Have you ever given any thought to the holidays you celebrate every year? The most blatantly obvious one, of course, is Halloween. Do we really think for one minute that this is a Christian holiday? Most see it as nothing more than a harmless fun-time of mascaraed costumes and candy for children, an all-around fun time for everyone. Although it is a lot of fun to dress in a disguise and collect candy, there's much more to Halloween than many realize. The fact of the matter is it’s far more sinister than anyone would care to know.
So, what are we really celebrating? Do we even know? Are we doing as God instructs us or are we following along with some past Pagan custom that our forefathers fell victim to? The plain and simple truth is God clearly warns us about this very thing.

“And the Lord said, “Because they have forsaken My law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice, nor walked according to it, but they have walked according to the dictates of their own hearts and after the Baals, which their fathers taught them." ~Jeremiah 9:13-14
How did Christianity get so tied together with Paganism anyway? It seems most of our Christian holidays are actually Pagan holy-days, or at least they started that way, and have morphed across the years into a blending of both cultures. It’s more than a coincidence that God repeatedly warns us about this ongoing problem of trying to blend Pagan/heathen customs together with Christian beliefs. Even if we’re participating just to join in and have fun, the root of this holiday is pure evil, and therefore should be avoided by those professing to be followers of Christ. Plain and simple!
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?” ~2 Corinthians 6:14-15 ESV
Christianity’s spread through what is now Europe was slow and complicated. It was hardly a one-shot, all-or-nothing takeover; few people were eager to give up their Pagan way of life. Instead, missionaries in many areas had more luck blending their message together with existing local Pagan traditions and beliefs, customs and rituals. This is simply a fact right out of history. Halloween is without any shadow of a doubt a combining of an early Roman Christian holy day and a Pagan festival day.
The Pagan part of this originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain which marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the darker part of the year. This was a day when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. This Celtic festival is famous among Celts who believed that at the end of summer, the beginning of the dark days, was the barrier between the living and the dead.
The Christian part of this merger was derived from the early Roman Catholic holy day, known as All Saints Day, also known as Hallowmas. All Saints' Day, sometimes referred to as the Feast of All Saints, is celebrated every year on November 1st by the Roman Catholic Church as well as some Protestant denominations. The earliest observance of this holy day was recorded in the early fourth century.
Halloween takes place on October 31. Halloween is the evening before the early Christian holy day, All Hallows' Day (also known as All Saints' or Hallowmas) on November 1st, and All Souls' Day on November 2nd, thus giving the holiday on October 31st the full name of All Hallows' Eve.
The word Halloween literally means "hallowed evening," and was known to early European celebrators as All Hallows' Eve. All Hallows' Eve (October 31) and All Saints' Day (November 1) both paid homage to saints ("hallows" = saints), and the name was eventually shortened to Halloween. Thus becoming the perfect combination of Christian and Pagan holy days morphed into one!
No wonder God repeated throughout the Bible not to worship as the heathen do, nor chase after their traditions or festivals! Good grief Charlie Brown, how could we have been so duped, tricked and deceived. The trick has been on us, the Christians, and we didn’t even know it.
“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” ~Colossians 2:8
There are only two choices in this life, to follow the word of God or to follow the traditions of man. We must choose this day whom we will follow.
“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” ~Joshua 24:14-15
