How can I know what’s sinful?

How can I know what’s sinful?

“Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth? says the LORD.”   ~Jeremiah 23:24 NLT

If you have to ask the question, “Is this wrong?” when you’re about to do something, the answer is almost always . . . yes! A safe rule of thumb to live by, the absolute best guideline—when in doubt, leave it out—don’t do it!

We all know the truth deep in our hearts, we all know right from wrong, whether we admit it or not. Think about it this way, if we truly believe what we’re doing isnt wrong, why do we try so hard to hide it?

Maybe it’s time we start to take sin much more seriously because even our smallest of iniquities will be found out. What is done in the dark will eventually come to light, so we better be careful what we try to hide, it may cost more than we were willing to lose.

”For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.”   ~Luke 8:17

The Bible tells us that God sees and hears all, He can see us no matter where we are. God’s ears can even hear our thoughts. So, why do we still try to hide our sinful actions from Him? Most of us have a pretty clear knowledge of right and wrong, and yet we still try to get away with things. We try to rationalize our wrong doings in a multitude of ways, playing silly word games, calling them white lies and innocent indiscretions to try to make it sound better. We’ve even coined catchphrases like “under the table” and“behind closed doors” to try to justify our sins.

“For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their iniquity hidden from My eyes.”   ~Jeremiah 16:17

Does God really see everything I do….?

“Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? For they say, the Lord seeth us not; the Lord hath forsaken the earth.”   ~Ezekiel 8:12 KJV

Yes, God absolutely sees everything we do, He is all seeing. It doesn’t matter how well we try to fool ourselves; God can’t be fooled. I don’t care how well you try to hide your under the table dealings or your behind closed doors affairs; God still sees it all.

So, how can we know without any doubt that something is a sin? Listen to the promptings of God’s Spirit, and read and trust His holy word because this is the only way around the never-ending pull of our sinful nature. We must hold everything up against God’s word to see if it lines up. The Bible must be the true north of our moral compass—the only reliable litmus that can always be trusted.

If you are thinking about doing something and suddenly you get a prompting, a feeling that you shouldn’t do it…listen to the Holy Spirit, this is God trying to lead you away from sin.

“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.”   ~Galatians 5:16-17 NLT

There is an entire list of do’s and don’ts in God’s Big Book. He left us a huge book of rules to follow so we can know everything He wants and doesn’t want us to do. He didn’t leave us to guess on anything. He is a very precise, black and white, right and wrong God.

There is a here and now consequence for every one of our actions, both good and bad. And He spells these consequences out very clearly in the Bible. If you do that, this will happen and so on. No guesswork needed when it comes to the laws of our Holy God.

How can I know what’s sinful?

But, you say, God doesn’t care about these tiny indiscretions and unimportant matters, He’s got much bigger things to take care of. Ahhhh. . . the feel-good lies that have saturated today's thinking! Satan has spent thousands of years trying to re-write God’s rules to appease man’s sinful desires and evil nature. However, just because our Pagan forefathers listened to the devil and decided to try to change God’s law, doesn’t make the truths of the Bible any less relevant or true. God’s word, is just that, God’s word! Period.

Not only do we have this perfect guidebook, we also have the promptings of God’s Spirit as well. He didn’t just toss us on this earth without any help. We will be enabled once we admit that we are doing it all wrong. As soon as we admit that we are messed up sinners and need saving, He will then endow us with His all-powerful Holy Spirit. Then, and only then, will we be able to walk away from sin!

We must learn to test everything against the word of God. Google it, whatever it might be that you’re thinking about doing or not doing, and just add the words, Bible verses at the end of your search topic. It will show you a list of verses you can read to learn what God says about everything!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”   ~Proverbs 3:5-6

Doing anything in the opposite way God tells us to, is an abomination. We must call sin by its right name. We can’t condone any sin and say it’s okay just because it’s become politically correct? If we go along with wrong because society calls it right, we are sinning against God, and in so doing, we are choosing to follow man rather than God!

“But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out.”   ~Numbers 32:23

You might say that I was a rather late spiritual bloomer, tripping my way into the Lord's arms not all that long ago. Nevertheless, I've been on the fast track ever since through a decade of Bible study courses and daily devotion. Changing careers a few years back and becoming a published author of Christian motivational books, leading to spiritual children's books and now this blog.
