Is the Word of God powerful?

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.”   ~Genesis 1:1-3

Is the Word of God powerful? I’d have to say that the Bible itself explains this irrefutable fact. If the Word of God was the causation of creation—of everything that exists—I’d say it was clearly power-filled. God literally spoke everything into existence! Then God said, is the preface to all of creation.

Is the word of God powerful?

The creative power of God is His Word, which He used as an instrument when He was making the world and all that is in it.  John 1:1 clearly tells us that Jesus is that Word, and also that He, Jesus, was this creative force!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”   ~John 1:1-3

By understanding that Jesus is the speaker of God’s Words, we can accept that He is the literal Word—He is God. The Word of God played an exclusive role in the creation of everything. This same life force that made all of God’s creations breathe and exist, was dependent upon that very Word of God—Jesus.

Jesus was not only the Word—the Creator of everything—He also became flesh. He came from heaven to earth as a human baby to literally reside with His creation. That blows my mind, that the Creator of sinful humanity would desire to come to this fallen, sin-filled planet to live with us.

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."   ~John 1:14

So if we believe that Jesus is this intrinsic creative part of God—the life-giving force—we must also accept that His Word is power filled as well. After all, His spoken words created everything and will re-create everything again when He returns.

Jesus came to earth to give us a physical example of God, something we could see and understand—a man—a human being like us. He came not only to show us that it is possible to keep His word, possible to tap into God’s power and do what is right—but more importantly, He came first and foremost to become a human sacrifice for our sins—the sacrificial Lamb.

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”   ~John 1:29

Just as Christ was resurrected from the dead by God the Father, so too will we be resurrected by Jesus!

“And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.”   ~Acts 4:33

Jesus will speak our names, one by one He will call us back to life through the mighty power of His spoken words. Just think about that and let it sink in for a minute. We will be resurrected (recreated) at the speaking of words. Once His words are spoken out loud we will exist again!

“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”   ~1 Corinthians 15:52

To further show the immense power of the word of God, consider this; even Jesus Himself quoted the Bible when confronted by Satan! He wanted to show us, by example, that we too can use His words to vanquish the enemy when we are under attack.

“Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, 'If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’ But He answered and said, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”   ~Matthew 4:3-4

Jesus rebuked Satan through the power of the spoken word of God. We can have this same victory, we can literally triumph over the devil simply by speaking God’s words.

God wants us to become empowered. If it worked for Jesus, it will work for us too. God wants us to jump into His word with all our heart. He wants us to get to know Him intimately, this happens when we study His written word as well as when we go to Him in prayer. We need the power of God’s word in every area of our lives. We need more than food and water to survive, we need every word that proceeded from the mouth of God.

“But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."   ~Matthew 4:4

You might say that I was a rather late spiritual bloomer, tripping my way into the Lord's arms not all that long ago. Nevertheless, I've been on the fast track ever since through a decade of Bible study courses and daily devotion. Changing careers a few years back and becoming a published author of Christian motivational books, leading to spiritual children's books and now this blog.
