Is it okay to consult with a medium?

“For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.”   ~Ecclesiastes 9:5

What does the Bible say about speaking to or praying to the dead? The above verse is very clear that the dead know nothing, they know nothing because they are dead. They are unable to think, speak or communicate to anyone. God specifically tells us not to try to communicate with the dead! The following verse says that anyone who consults with the dead is an abomination and this act is detestable to the Lord. And the reason is that the dead can not communicate with the living, but the demons that impersonate the deceased will! Yikes! Just think about that for a minute and let it sink in . . . you just might think twice before you seek out a fortune teller or medium, or play games trying to talk to the dead with an Ouija Board ever again!

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.”   ~Deuteronomy 18:10-1

There was also a man named Saul in the Bible who consulted with a medium to bring up the spirit of a dead prophet. This attempt resulted in his own death because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the Lord, he consulted with a medium instead of the Lord only!

“So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.”   ~1 Chronicles 10:13-14

Why is it wrong to talk to the dead…?

Praying to the dead is strictly forbidden in the Bible. God has explicitly said that such an act is wrong and should not be attempted. So, where on earth did the idea of praying to dead people ever come from? It originated in the early Roman Catholic church where the parishioners were instructed by the priests to pray to Mary and to the dead saints. In fact, Mary is taught to be the mediator between man and Jesus. However, the Bible clearly states that Jesus is the mediator between man and God.

“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”   ~1 Timothy 2:5

The word of God has been corrupted, this is indisputable, and Rome was the leader of this corruption. So, how can we know who or what to believe? Go to the only source of truth, the Bible, and verify everything you hear. The holy word of God is our only 100% accurate source of truth in this life.

Think of the Bible as your compass. Would you go hiking in a foreign land without a compass to keep you on course? We need to trust the guidance of God over anyone else. God can not lie. He never changes, and He is always faithful and true.

“So that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie…”   ~Hebrews 6:18

If we understand that the Bible is very clear as to the state of the dead, we also understand that it is virtually impossible to speak to a dead person. So, who are we actually communicating with if we try to talk to a deceased relative? Or who is it that a medium is summoning? The demons that work for Satan, that's who! The absolute only way you will ever hear anything from a deceased relative is if you are being deceived by Satan. The Bible gives us lots of examples of this type of demon trickery and spiritual deception. We are commanded by God to never communicate through any spirit of deviation, for in so doing we are communicating with evil spirits!

“Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation. And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And he came out that very hour.”   ~Acts 16:16-18

Does the Bible talk about psychics…?

Precisely what does God teach regarding all of these; mediums, fortune tellers, soothsayers, witches and wizards, psychics, and for that matter… magic in general?

“You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying. Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”   ~Leviticus 19:26 & 31

“And when they say to you, ‘Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,’ should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”   ~Isaiah 8:19-20

Let’s start with a simple dictionary definition:

psychic:

Relating to or denoting faculties or phenomena that are apparently inexplicable by natural laws, especially involving telepathy or clairvoyance."psychic powers" synonyms: supernatural, paranormal, otherworldly, supernormal, preternatural, metaphysical, magic, magical, mystical, occult.

If you go to a psychic or medium and they give you a message from the dead, they are more than likely lying in hopes to deceive you. If the information they give you is accurate they are probably communicating with evil spirits, that is the demons of Satan, but they are certainly not talking with your dead relative. So, with this biblical knowledge, you might want to be very careful regarding such practices. The above dictionary definition of psychic clearly says occult! God tells us to never be involved with anything to do with the occult because it is evil! There are a hundred Bible verses about the occult.

God talks of a frightening end to those who speak enchantments and sorceries. He tells of what will be the end for those who think they don’t need God, that think they can rely on themselves; that they can make their own way and learn of the future from mere mortals without the intercession of Jesus.

“And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.”   ~2 Corinthians 11:14-15

You might say that I was a rather late spiritual bloomer, tripping my way into the Lord's arms not all that long ago.
